Atovaquone Proguanil (also known as ‘generic Malarone’) is used to prevent malaria. These malaria tablets belong to the family of medicines called antimalarials. They kill the parasite P. falciparum, which is known to cause malaria, stopping it from multiplying. It’s suitable for adults and children and has two active ingredients: atovaquone and proguanil.

Malaria is caused by four different strains of malaria parasites. The various treatment options are based on which strain is the most common in the area that you intend to travel to.

The course should be started one to two days before you travel, and taken for the full length of time that you are in the malaria zone. You should also continue the course for a further seven days.
It is important to continue to take Atovaquone/Proguanil (generic Malarone) for seven days after leaving the malaria zone to ensure the parasites from an infected bite are killed.
If you miss a dose of generic Malarone, you should take a tablet as soon as you remember. You should not take more than one tablet a day; if too much time has elapsed since your last dose, continue as before taking one tablet a day.
If you are sick within one hour of taking your generic Malarone tablet, you will need to take a replacement tablet to ensure that you are adequately protected. You should then continue taking your course as normal.
You can drink alcohol; however, one of the possible side effects associated with Atovaquone/Proguanil (generic Malarone) is dizziness; if you experience this, avoid drinking alcohol as it may make your dizziness worse.
