The most common cause of hair loss in men is called androgenetic alopecia (also called androgenic alopecia). In men, it is known as male pattern baldness or male pattern hair loss. It becomes more common with age, and it affects about 80% of men over their lifetimes. While hair loss in men aged 40 and older is more common, it can begin as early as the late teens or 20s.
Male pattern hair loss is due to a combination of hormones, called androgens, and genetics. If you have a family history of hair loss, you may be more likely to carry genes that put you at risk of experiencing hair loss. This is why the age at which it starts can vary so drastically for each man.
Male pattern baldness usually starts with hair loss at the front and sides of the scalp, progressing to the back of the head. If you notice sudden, patchy hair loss or more hair loss than usual, speak to your GP. There may be other conditions associated with your hair loss.
The active ingredient in Regaine is Minoxidil.
It is believed to work by increasing blood and nutrient supply to the hair follicle. This helps strengthen existing hair and, in some cases, can stimulate secondary growth. It is thought to reverse the hair loss process by increasing the diameter of the hair shaft. It is also believed to promote and prolong the ‘growth’ phase of hair.
In the early stages of Regaine use, it stimulates the follicle to move into the growth phase, causing old hairs to fall out, making way for new, thicker hairs – so don't worry if hair loss increases for a very short time at first.
Hair regrowth may occur as early as 8 weeks after starting Regaine for men. This can vary from person to person, and it can take up to 16 weeks to get visible results for hair loss. The progression of hair loss before treatment is a factor in the success of treatment. Catching hair loss early with treatment usually allows for faster, stronger results.
