Biotona Bio Maqui is a sublime freeze-dried powder of tiny deep purple to black berries that grow abundantly on evergreen shrubs in Patagonia in southern Chile and Argentina. Those highly flavorful and unique berries have for centuries been considered the well-kept secret of the Mapuche Indians, the indigenous people of that region. They were the only ones to hold out during the Spanish conquests, and their extreme endurance is said to be due to drinking large quantities of maqui tea. The purple color of the powder is due to anthocyanins, substances the plant produces as protection against external and extreme influences. The maqui berries for Biotona are picked in the wild in rainforests in Chile and processed immediately after harvesting and selection by freeze-drying into a powder that is very close in taste, smell and color to the fresh berries. That drying process also ensures that the naturally present nutrients and phytonutrients are optimally preserved.
