A cough is a reflex action that helps to clear your airways of mucus and irritants. It can be caused by a variety of things, including:
Infections: The most common cause of a cough is a respiratory infection, such as a cold, the flu, or bronchitis. The infection can irritate the airways and cause inflammation, leading to a cough.
Allergens: If you have allergies, inhaling an allergen, such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander can cause inflammation in the airways, triggering a cough.
Irritants: Inhaling irritants such as smoke, dust, or fumes, can also trigger a cough.
Postnasal drip: If you have mucus dripping from the back of the nose into the throat (post nasal drip), this can irritate the throat and cause a cough.
Medical conditions: Some medical conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and heartburn, can also cause a cough.
If you or your child has a cough that lasts for more than two weeks, or if it's accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, or wheezing, see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
