Defediol is a drug based on a form of vitamin D, calcifediol, used to treat vitamin D deficiency and resulting problems.
Defediol is used to treat vitamin D deficiency in adults and to prevent vitamin D deficiency in adults with known risks, such as in patients with malabsorption syndrome, mineral and bone impairment due to chronic renal failure or other known risks. Defediol is also used to treat bone thinning (osteoporosis), as an adjunct to other medications.
Directions for use
Always take Defediol exactly as stated in the package insert or as told to you by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take more of the medicine or take the medicine more often than prescribed by your doctor (every week, every two weeks or every month). The recommended dosages are:
- Treatment of vitamin D deficiency and prevention of vitamin D deficiency in patients with identified risks: one capsule (266 micrograms of calcifediol monohydrate) once a month.
- Supplement to specific therapy for osteoporosis: one capsule (266 micrograms calcifediol monohydrate) once a month.
Composition
The active substance in Defediol is calcifediol monohydrate. Each capsule contains 266 micrograms of calcifediol monohydrate. The other substances in this remedy are: anhydrous ethanol, medium-chain triglycerides and the components of the capsule are: gelatin, glycerol, sorbitol 70% (E420), titanium dioxide (E171) and sunshine yellow (E110).
Warnings
You should not use Defediol if you are allergic to calcifediol or any of the substances in this drug, if you suffer from hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood) or hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in the urine), if you suffer from calcium stone formation, or if you have been diagnosed with hypervitaminosis D (excess vitamin D in the organism).

Like any drug, Defediol 0.266 mg can have side effects. Not everyone experiences them. However, side effects can occur in case of excessive or longer treatment than prescribed by your doctor, which can lead to hypercalcemia (increased calcium levels in the blood) and hypercalciuria (increased calcium levels in the urine). Other side effects include allergic reactions such as itching, localized swelling, difficulty breathing and redness of the skin.
How to store this medicine
Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use Defediol after the expiration date. There are no special storage conditions for this medicine.
