During exercise, the body perspires so that the body temperature does not rise too high. The fluid you lose must be replenished by drinking to maintain fluid balance. When you take in too little fluid relative to the fluid loss (= dehydration) it will have a negative effect on performance.

In addition to restoring or maintaining fluid balance, a sports drink can also maintain blood glucose (sugar in the blood) and replenish muscle glycogen (sugar in the muscle). This is important since performance is affected by how many carbohydrates are available. Therefore, it is important to replenish fuel reserves with additional carbohydrates during exercise. If you do not ingest carbohydrates during prolonged exercise, muscle glycogen reserves would be depleted after about 90 minutes.

The amount of carbohydrates you should take in during exercise depends on the duration of exercise.

• Efforts <1hr: no need to take carbohydrates during exercise.
