The eyes of children are much more sensitive to UV rays than those of adults. Their pupils are much larger and absorb more light. Their eye lens is also highly transparent, providing only a thin protective barrier against UV rays. Up to age 12, nearly three-quarters of UV rays are not filtered and can damage the retina.
