Properties
Hyaluronic acid is physiologically speaking the most important proteoglycan that occurs naturally in the extracellular matrix of the mucosa. There it interacts with the other components of connective tissue, providing the strength and elasticity essential for healthy oral hygiene. Hyaluronic acid has a number of positive properties that help ensure a successful dental care and oral hygiene routine. For example, hyaluronic acid can absorb its own dry weight in water 50 times. This characteristic gives hyaluronic acid its ability to act as a barrier against the penetration of microorganisms and other toxins that may contribute to the etiology of gum disease.
