Properties

Tyrosine taken on an empty stomach penetrates the blood-brain barrier
enters for conversion in the brain. A fraction of it is then converted
into L-DOPA through the action of an enzyme called tyrosine hydroxylase, which catalyzes the
catalyzes its conversion into dopamine. Studies show that those conversions increase
under stressful situations or intense cognitive exercise. In the medium term, stress is known to lower levels of catecholamines, reducing cognitive performance, probably due to the depletion
of amino acids essential for their synthesis (dopamine – norepinephrine).
Tyrosine deficiency can lead to apathy, impaired concentration, memory and
alertness, and in severe cases to burnout and hyperactivity. That deficiency can possibly cause restless legs syndrome, which is accentuated at night (tingling, need for movement). In mood disorders caused by premenstrual syndrome (PMS), the amount of free L-tyrosine decreases
significantly decreases, causing both stress and depression. The lack of serotonin
accentuates that phenomenon. Finally, L-tyrosine is the direct precursor of thyroid hormones that produce thyroxine in the presence of iodine and vitamins
