Mometeva is a nasal spray used in adults (18 years and older) to treat the symptoms of hay fever (also called seasonal allergic rhinitis) provided the seasonal allergic rhinitis was initially diagnosed by a physician.

Mometeva contains mometasone furoate, a drug that belongs to the drug group of corticosteroids. When mometasone furoate is atomized into the nose, it can reduce inflammation (swelling or irritation of the nose), sneezing or itching and provide relief for a stuffy or runny nose.

How to use

• The recommended dose is two sprays in each nostril once a day.
• In some patients, symptoms may subside within 12 hours of the first dose of Mometeva nasal spray; however, it can sometimes take up to two days for treatment to have sufficient effect.
• Once symptoms are under control, your doctor may recommend that you reduce the dose to one spray, once a day, in each nostril.
• However, if you do not begin to feel better, you should consult your doctor.
• If no improvement is noted after 14 days, a doctor should be contacted.
• The product should not be used for more than 3 months without medical supervision.

Warnings

Do not use Mometeva if you are allergic to any of the substances in this medicine. Also, do not use it if you have an untreated infection in your nose, such as herpes, or if you recently underwent nasal surgery or have an injury to your nose. You should not use the nasal spray until your nose is healed.

Be extra careful with this medicine if you have or have ever had tuberculosis, if you have another infection, if you are taking other corticosteroids, either by mouth or in the form of injections, or if you have cystic fibrosis. Contact your doctor if your immune system is not working properly (you are having difficulty fighting an infection) and you come in contact with someone who has measles or chickenpox. You should avoid contact with people who have these infections.

Composition

The active substance in Mometeva is mometasone furoate. Each nebulizer (0.1 ml) contains 50 micrograms of mometasone furoate (as monohydrate). The total weight of an atomization is 100 mg. The other substances in this medicine are microcrystalline cellulose and sodium carmellose, glycerol, sodium citrate dihydrate, citric acid monohydrate, polysorbate 80, benzalkonium chloride and water for injections.

Possible side effects

Acute hypersensitivity reactions (allergic reactions) may occur after using this medicine. These reactions can be serious. You should stop using Mometeva nasal spray and seek medical attention immediately if you experience the following symptoms:

• Swollen face, tongue or pharynx.
• Difficulty swallowing.
• Hives.
• Wheezing.
• Difficulty breathing.

Other side effects may include: headache, sneezing and irritation/burning in the nose, nosebleeds, sore nose or throat, ulcers in the nose, infection of the respiratory tract, increase in pressure in the eye (glaucoma) and/or cataracts with consequent vision impairment, damage to the part of the nose that separates the nostrils (nasal septum), changes in taste and smell, breathing difficulties and/or wheezing, blurred vision.

How to store this medicine

Store Mometeva out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiration date. Store below 25°C. Do not store in the freezer. The spray should be used within 8 weeks of initial use.
