Essential oils are the fragrant, volatile components of medicinal plants, herbs, flowers, fruits, seeds… Essential oils are usually found in special oil cells, glands or ducts in the plant. The plant produces them for many reasons: as a pheromone to attract certain insects or as a deterrent against certain insects, as protection against certain diseases… The amount of essential oil is highly dependent on the plant. Physalis uses only the following traditional production methods:
- Long and complete steam distillation at low pressure. This involves passing steam through a distillation vessel containing plants (leaves, flowers…). The plant cells burst open, the volatile, aromatic essences accompany the steam and condense after cooling. Thus one obtains the hydrolate (the water with the water-soluble aromatic molecules) and the essential oil (non-water-soluble aromatic molecules and (usually) lighter than water). The oil floats on the water and is decanted.
- Pressing, in citrus fruits. The peel of citrus fruits is very rich in essential oils. After pressing, the oil is filtered.
