Properties
The fruit Citrus sinensis is native to Mediterranean and tropical regions and is called “sweet orange” to distinguish it from the “bitter orange” (Citrus aurantium). The origin of this orange tree is in the Himalayas and southern China. It was the Portuguese who brought the fruit around the year 1400. Since then, its cultivation spread widely throughout different countries. The small sweet orange tree, family of the Rutaceae, is an ancient hybrid that probably originated from the cross between the Citrus maxima and the Citrus reticulata.
