Adaptogens, anti-stress agents or tonics
The term adaptogen refers to the body’s ability to resist stressful situations and recover from inner turmoil or strenuous physical exertion.
Adaptogens must meet three conditions:
- They must induce nonspecific resistance to both physical, chemical and biological stressors.
- They must have a normalizing effect and promote homeostasis.
- They must be safe (non-toxic) and affect normal body functions as little as possible.
It is becoming increasingly clear from clinical research that their action is based on modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a system that becomes dysregulated in persistent physical or mental stress situations. In the process, the adrenal glands come under severe stress and, as we know, they are responsible for the production of corticosteroids, such as DHEA and testosterone. Furthermore, it also appears that adaptogens activate hexokinase. Hexokinase is the enzyme that phosphorylates glucose into glucose-6-phosphate. That reaction is the first step in glycolysis, a process in which glucose is broken down to release energy.
Composition
Some key adaptogens
- Lepidium meyenii or maca.
- Maca is known for its energizing properties.
- Maca also contains a high content of sterols (0.05% to 0.1%) and is therefore also taken by strength athletes, as an alternative to anabolic steroids.
- Rhodiola rosea.
- Rhodiola rosea is one of the most important and studied adaptogenic plants. The dried extract of the root contains polyphenols, of which rosavin and salidroside are the main, active substances.
- Acute intake of Rhodiola rosea improves endurance capacity (= time to exhaustion) and VO2max.
Phosphatidylserine (90%)
- After an intense training period, most athletes have decreased testosterone and increased cortisol levels, which can lead to muscle breakdown and possibly overtraining. Also, increased ACTH (= adrenocorticotropic hormone) concentration after training or competition leads to higher cortisol levels and a disturbed cortisol-testosterone ratio.
- Several studies show that supplementation of phosphatidylserine before training or competition reduces both ACTH and cortisol concentrations. One study, conducted in the Department of Sports Science at the University of Wales, shows that in cyclists, phosphatidylserine can have an ergogenic (= performance enhancing) effect.
