Thirst quencher or energy drink

The difference between a thirst quencher and an energy drink is solely in the carbohydrate content. A thirst quencher contains 40 to 80 grams of carbohydrates per liter, while an energy drink contains 80 to 200 grams of carbohydrates per liter. An athlete can consume a maximum of 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour from a drink, therefore one should try to take in 60 to 70 grams of carbohydrates per hour.

• In hot weather, a thirst quencher will do the trick perfectly. If you drink 1 liter per hour in the summer, you get +/- 60 grams of carbohydrates and also the much-needed fluid.

• In cold weather, in winter, it is impossible to drink 1 liter per hour and drinking a thirst quencher will never provide enough energy. That’s where an energy drink is in order. Due to the high osmolarity of an energy drink, gastric emptying is inhibited, and therefore so is fluid absorption. Energy drinks are therefore only suitable in situations with minimal fluid loss (= colder weather).

An energy drink can also be perfectly used to replenish glycogen stores the days before the race. An energy drink should also contain several types of sugars, the necessary electrolytes, and no vitamins or other additives.

How to use

Mix 1 dose (4 scoops) with 250 ml of cold water.

• As a sports drink: drink 125 ml every 15 minutes during exercise.
• To recharge glycogen before a competition: drink 500 ml twice a day.
• Do not exceed the daily recommended serving.
