Anemia in athletes

Anemia is caused by too low a hemoglobin level, a lack of circulating red blood cells or both. A deficiency of hemoglobin can be caused by a lack of iron in the diet. A deficiency in circulating red blood cells can be caused by continuous minor bleeding from injuries, bruises and increased blood loss in the digestive tract. Increased blood flow in athletes can also destroy red blood cells more quickly. Finally, hemolysis can occur due to lipid peroxidation in the cell wall of red blood cells by free radicals. Red blood cells are important for oxygen transport to working muscles. It goes without saying, therefore, that anemia has a negative effect on performance.
