Oxi-Vital is one of the most comprehensive combinations of antioxidants.
- Provides for all of the body’s antioxidant needs.
Oxidation
Iron rusts, butter turns rancid and an apple turns brown. All of these chemical processes are referred to by the collective term “oxidation. Oxygen plays an important role in these oxidation reactions. Various oxidation reactions also take place in the body, resulting in the formation of free radicals that can cause damage to protein, fat and DNA molecules.
- The formation of these free radicals is nevertheless a normal biological process in the body. They can even play an important physiological role such as defending us against bacteria.
Antioxidants are compounds that can render free radicals harmless. A problem arises when the balance between the formation of free radicals and the antioxidant defense is disturbed, one then speaks of oxidative stress.
- Such greatly increased pressure by free radicals is found, among other things, in stress, disease, environmental pollution, …
- A lot more free radicals are also released during strenuous physical exertion, as a result of increased oxygen consumption in the mitochondria.
Our body defends itself against these free radicals in two ways.
- First, there are the antioxidant enzymes, which require minerals such as selenium, zinc, manganese and copper.
- A second form of protection are the antioxidant vitamins that we take in through diet, such as vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene (= dietary antioxidants). Since these dietary antioxidants are themselves lost when free radicals are defused, they can inactivate only one to two of these harmful particles per molecule. This is also why supplementation with an antioxidant complex is preferable to administration of a single antioxidant. As many different antioxidants as possible can optimize the antioxidant cascade, which means that oxidized, damaged antioxidants are restored to their antioxidant function (e.g. vitamin E can be restored by vitamin C and vitamin C can in turn be restored by glutathione, …).
Best to give an antioxidant complex in a physiological dose, because more does not always mean better. On the contrary, high doses of antioxidants can start to behave like a pro-oxidant instead of an antioxidant.
Composition
Coenzyme Q10 and alpha-lipoic acid
- Specially for athletes, Coenzyme Q10 and alpha-lipoic acid have been added.
- Coenzyme Q10 is the limiting factor (the weakest link) in the rate of energy production in the mitochondria. Heart muscle and skeletal muscle are most susceptible to CoQ10 deficiency.
- Alpha-lipoic acid plays an important role in sugar burning in cells for energy production. Alpha-lipoic acid is a strong antioxidant and is able to recycle other antioxidants so that they can exert their protective effects longer.
How to use
- Take 1 capsule daily before training or competition.
