Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are extremely important for good sports performance. Indeed, they are very important sources of energy for the skeletal muscles during prolonged and/or intensive training such as in endurance sports or intensive intermittent sports such as soccer.
- After a competition, an intensive workout or a long-duration workout, the carbohydrates, occurring in the muscles in the form of muscle sugar or glycogen, are depleted.
- In order to be able to start the next competition or training in optimal conditions, the glycogen stores must be restored as quickly as possible.
Immediately after stopping exercise, the muscles are in an ideal situation to build up glycogen quickly. This is due to increased insulin sensitivity, increased glycogen synthetase activity, and increased transport of glucose from the bloodstream into the muscle cell via the GLUT-4 protein in the muscle cell membrane.
- Because of this ideal metabolic situation, glycogen resynthesis proceeds most rapidly up to about two hours after exercise. An athlete should make smart use of this, by taking in sufficient carbohydrates as soon as possible after competition or training.
Research has shown that the best results are obtained by taking 1.2 grams of carbohydrates per kg of body weight immediately after exercise, and repeating this at 2, 4 and 6 hours after exercise.
- In the end, the athlete should try to take 8 to 10 grams of carbohydrates per 24 hours.
- The first two intakes should preferably be in liquid form because this is how the absorption of carbohydrates, protein and water occurs most rapidly.
Recent studies have shown that when protein peptides and amino acids (leucine and phenylalanine) are added to a carbohydrate mixture, recovery is faster. By using a carbohydrate-protein mixture after exercise, smaller amounts of carbohydrates per hour are needed to still achieve optimal recovery (+/- 0.8 to 1 gram of KH per kg of body weight).
- Fast muscle recovery after competition or training.
- An additional benefit of adding protein is that it accelerates muscle recovery and muscle building after competition or training. Recup Shake is such a mixture of carbohydrates and protein peptides.
