Zyrtec is an anti-allergic medication. The active ingredient of Zyrtec is cetirizine dihydrochloride. It is indicated for adults and children 6 years of age and older for the relief of nasal and ocular symptoms associated with seasonal and non-seasonal allergic rhinitis, and for the relief of urticaria.
Directions for use
Take Zyrtec as described in the package insert or as told to you by your doctor or pharmacist. The tablets should be swallowed with a glass of liquid. The tablet can be divided into 2 equal doses.
Dosage
- Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: The recommended dose is 10 mg (1 tablet) once daily.
- Use in children 6 to 12 years of age: The recommended dosage is 5 mg twice daily (half a tablet twice daily).
- Patients with renal impairment: Patients with moderate renal impairment are recommended to take 5 mg once daily.
Composition
The active substance in this drug is cetirizine dihydrochloride. One film-coated tablet contains 10 mg of cetirizine dihydrochloride. The other substances in this drug are microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, Opadry Y-1-7000 (hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (E464), titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 400).
Warnings
Do not take Zyrtec if you have severe kidney disease requiring dialysis, or if you are allergic to cetirizine dihydrochloride, to hydroxyzine, to piperazine derivatives, or to any of the substances in this medicine. If you have problems emptying your bladder, have epilepsy or if you are at risk for convulsions, ask your doctor for advice. It is recommended to avoid the concomitant use of Zyrtec with alcohol.
Possible side effects
Like any medicine, Zyrtec can have side effects, although not everybody gets them. Possible side effects include allergic reactions, somnolence (drowsiness), dizziness, headache, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, fatigue and others. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects.

Store this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use Zyrtec after the expiration date.
