Picoprep is a powder containing sodium picosulfate, a laxative that works by increasing intestinal activity. Picoprep also contains magnesium citrate, another type of laxative that works by retaining fluid in the intestines, providing a cleansing effect. It is used in adults, adolescents and children over 1 year of age to empty the bowels before an x-ray examination, endoscopy or surgery if deemed clinically necessary.
Directions for use
Picoprep should be dissolved in a glass of cold water (about 150 ml). Stir for two to three minutes and then drink the solution. Sometimes the solution becomes warm as Picoprep dissolves. In that case, wait to drink it until it has cooled sufficiently.
Dosage
- Adults (including the elderly) and children 9 years of age and older: The recommended dose is one sachet 10 to 18 hours before your examination and one sachet 4 to 6 hours before your examination.
- Children (under 9 years of age): For timing of administration in children, see adult instructions.
